Maccine & Graeme play their cards right!

Success is on the cards for Maccine and Graeme Hall as they prepare to make the most of a major opportunity.

The pair, who own design consultancy Designs Unique, are going to London on April 19 to pitch their greeting card designs to influential Dragons’ Den type panels from the greeting cards industry.

The event, held at the British Design Centre in Islington, is organised by the Greeting Card Association.  It gives smaller, independent publishers the opportunity to impress the major retailers, of whom about 20 are expected to attend, including names such as Paper Chase and House of Fraser.  Maccine and Graeme will do two five-minute pitches and will field questions on the history of the company, its approach to ethics and its design process.

If they impress they could be in line for major orders for their distinctive greetings cards which are already proving to be a hit with buyers around the UK.

Maccine and Graeme, who have been in business for 12 years providing brand development, graphic design, website design and development and print management services, began designing cards, under the label Uniquely Yours, about two years ago.

From their studio in Maiden Law, near Lanchester, they now design and print a whole range for celebrations, festivals and special occasions, many of which are hand-finished.  Many are classic car themed, reflecting a passion of Graeme’s.

Last year one of their sympathy cards won a competition which resulted in it going on sale in seven stores in the West Midlands, where it is still a best-seller.  They have also supplied cards for Beamish Museum and others are available in local shops.

After Graeme produced some early, experimental designs, they researched the market, attended exhibitions, tested the market and put some money into development.  Cards now make up about 10% of the business and is growing every month.

“Having been in business for 12 years, we know you have to invest in your business if you believe in it,’’ says Maccine. “We’ve got our style the way we like it now and this is the year we are really going to start pushing it.’’

And they deserve a DBN good luck card for that.
